Both GIA and IGI certificates are accepted worldwide, but there are meaningful differences that affect trade pricing and consumer trust. Here's what every dealer should know.

When sourcing diamonds for trade, the certification attached to a stone is one of the most significant factors determining resale value, consumer confidence, and trade pricing. GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute) are the two most widely accepted labs in the international market.

GIA: The Historical Gold Standard

GIA established the 4Cs grading system and remains the most widely recognised diamond grading body globally. GIA certificates command a consistent premium in most markets for natural diamonds.

Key characteristics:

  • Conservative, consistent grading — industry reference point
  • Widely recognised across all retail markets worldwide
  • Premium pricing: typically 5–15% above comparable IGI-certified stones in the natural diamond segment
  • Strong consumer trust, particularly in the US and European markets

IGI: The Leader for Lab-Grown

IGI has become the dominant certification laboratory for lab-grown diamonds. It was earlier to build large-scale lab-grown grading infrastructure than GIA and has become the standard for the segment.

Key characteristics:

  • Faster turnaround times, particularly for lab-grown
  • Slightly more liberal grading parameters than GIA (colour and clarity can sometimes grade higher)
  • Preferred by most lab-grown diamond manufacturers globally
  • Accepted by major retailers including many luxury brands

For most trade buyers, carrying a mix of GIA and IGI certified goods is the optimal approach. GIA certificates are particularly important when supplying to jewellers who serve the bridal and luxury market. IGI certification is generally sufficient — and often preferred — for lab-grown inventory.

HRD and GRS

HRD (Antwerp World Diamond Centre) is the European equivalent of GIA and carries strong recognition in European trade markets. GRS (Gem Research Swisslab) is the gold standard for coloured gemstone certification, particularly for rubies, sapphires, and emeralds.

Amstela supplies goods certified by GIA, IGI, HRD, and GRS. Your trade desk can advise on certification preferences for your specific market.
